Itinerary
Day 1 Istanbul
Arrive in Istanbul and transfer to your hotel. We pick you up from your hotel by our coach and professional guide to drive to the northern side of the city along the shore-line. Balance of the day at leisure. First we stop at Ortakoy square which means “the village in the middle” in Turkish. Here is full of Istanbul’s coolest, and most artsy neighborhoods, with trendy boutiques, atmospheric cafes and bistros, and crowds of young, sophisticated residents and visitors. Ortakoy is home to a mosque, a synagogue and a ,Greek Orthodox Church, which huddle together between the sea and gently sloping hills. It is a place where the frescoes of Byzantium meet the architecture of Islam, and where the white washed summer residencies of the Ottoman aristocracy, with their lattice woodwork, press up against modern buildings of the newer middle class. On the main road stand Etz Ahayim Synagogue and the Russian Orthodox Church of St. Phocas with handsome interior decor. Ortakoy Mosque is just located almost on the water. The district of Arnavutkoy was one of the closest villages to Istanbul and inhabited as early as Roman times. The name, meaning Albanian Village, is derived from the fact that centuries later settlers from the shores of Dalmatia (who may have migrated there from scandinavia) made their home in Arnavutkoy. Despite the name Arnavutkoy, which dates from the mid 1500s, the population seems to have been mainly Jewish for most of the village’s history, and only became Greek in more recent times. Then we will cross among Bebek; one of the most exciting and beautiful coastlines of the Bosphorus, enjoy an excellent view as we roll along the strait. We return back after taking pictures of fishermen along the coast.
